Although it was late and the sun had set, Pilot was not tired. He yearned to be looking at something other than the backs of his eyelids, so he slid out of bed and threw on his vest.
His blue and white hair was slightly ruffled, and when he stepped outside the soft spring breeze blew some into his face. He perked his bluish-white ears, listening. The night was as quiet as it got where he lived.
He set out walking, enjoying the cool night. He strolled through town, looking through the windows of all the dark shops.
A familiar scent caught his attention, and he tilted his head as he turned down a smaller side street. He whistled a tune to himself as he rounded the corner, and then his heart sped up.
At the end of the street was a small night cafe, and sitting at the only table outside was Pilot's crush, Marie.
He fidgeted, a bit nervous. As happy-go-lucky as the beautiful Animalian seemed, Pilot knew that inside she was stone cold.
He considered turning around and leaving, but by then Marie had noticed him. She sniffed the air a few times and tilted her head before smiling. "Pilot, is that you?" she asked sweetly.
Pilot chuckled nervously and walked forward. He nodded, but quickly reminded himself that she was blind and called out, "Yes it's me, Marie-chan."
She nodded and tapped her cane around, locating the other chair. She pushed it out and pokes the seat with her cane. "Why don't you join me, Pilot-san?" she asked politely.
"Sure!" Pilot said happily, plopping into the chair.
Marie offered up a small smile and leaned back in her chair. "So, Pilot-san, what are you doing up?" she inquired.
Pilot shrugged and replied, "I'm not quite sure. It's mostly because I could sleep."
Marie nodded and said, "I know how you feel. Sleep is an illusive thing that often holds bad memories in the form of dreams."
The sadness and cold feeling in her voice made Pilot whimper with sorrow. Marie was such a pained girl underneath her shell of joy.
Marie tilted her head upon hearing the noise and asked, "Pilot-san, what's wrong?"
Pilot shook his head, once again forgetting her blinded eyes. He giggled softly and nervously and replied, "Nothing, Marie-chan... It's just that..."
He paused.
"Go on. You can tell me," Marie urged, a gentle tone to her voice.
"You just seem so sad, Marie-chan, deep down. But you always hide it..." Pilot trailed off, suddenly regretting saying that when he saw the look on Marie's face.
He couldn't tell whether she was mad at him for calling her sad or if that had made her upset as well.
He opened his mouth to apologize and try to crack a sexual joke, but Marie cut him off. "Maybe I am sad, Pilot. And maybe it's because I don't have someone who cares for me," she said softly, sliding her hand across the table until she found his.
She entwined their fingers and smiled at him, her eyes almost seemingly fixed on Pilot's. "W-well, Marie-chan, I care for y-you..."
Pilot said it so quietly it was almost a whisper, but Marie's strong ears heard him.
She tightened her grip on his hand and he worried he'd gone too far; but instead of crushing every bone in his hand as he'd feared she would, Marie only pulled his hand to her and kisses his knuckles.
He blushed and stuttered, his usual goofy and care-free personality being taken over by his shy side. Despite his perverted jokes, Pilot wasn't accustomed to romance.
Marie could sense this, and she smirked a bit. "I love you Pilot-san," she said, with true feeling in her voice.
Pilot blushed darker than he ever had before and somehow managed to get his tongue to form the words, "I love you too, Marie-chan."
I am so sorry if they're OOC *dies*
Pilot and Marie are so cute in my opinion.
